Gradual Change in Personality

Gradual Change in Personality

Changes in the human personality do not take place overnight. Before going to bed, take a look in the mirror to observe your face. On waking up the next morning, observe keenly if your face has changed overnight. It has not. It is the same face. Look at it again the following evening. You will find that, from morning to evening, it is the same face. The next morning, next evening, it is the same face. Five years or 10 years hence, compare yourself to your photograph of today. Observe the difference. Did you go to bed and wake up with a changed face? The changes in human personality are very subtle and imperceptible. People, who begin to practice meditation after receiving the mantra, soon become impatient because the mind changes very slowly. A person once called me over the phone and said, “I got my mantra three months ago. When do I get enlightenment?”

The process of progressing spiritually and undertaking a specific practice regularly is called sadhana.  Generally this slow, gentle and gradual process. It cannot be rushed into because there is so much to assimilate. But human beings are impatient and want to get immediate results. But remember, there are no shortcuts to enlightenment.
