Japa is mental recitation, or better still, the remembrance, of a mantra, which gradually awakens energy vibrations in the mind-field. The practice of meditation really begins with mantra_diksha, the receiving of a personal mantra by initiation through a qualified teacher or preceptor in the tradition of a particular lineage; all the rest is preparation.

There are several ways of practicing Japa, reciting a mantra aloud. Kirtan is a form of japa, For total beginners there is a form of Japa which entails writing one’s mantra 1,25000 times. This is a form seldom advised in our tradition. Just having a mantra is not enough. There are stages from the beginning to the highly advanced stage in the practice of mantra. All these steps are stages in a Japa.

The highest form of Japa is mental Japa, in which one gets immersed in the silence of the mind. Here, the four phases in the practice and experience of mental Japa are explained.
