Use of The Mala

Different type of malas (necklaces) are needed for reciting different mantras. One may be advised to wear a particular mala all the time and use a different kind of mala for reciting the mantra. All this is between the student and the preceptor.

Big bead malas slow you down. By the time you cross from one side of the hill to other, two seconds would passed. The big bead malas can be worn for decorative purposes but for doing japa, small beads with a little knot in between, are used.

Do you need to use the mala? There are two different aspects to japa, each of which has its own purpose. One often needs to go through a period of discipline with the mala: “I shall do so many repetitions.” In practice, do a part of the japa with the mala, so that basic discipline is maintained and once a habit is formed, put the mala aside and go into meditation. Visualizing the pathways to subtler epths, pus aside the mala and enter deeper, deeper, and deeper into the mind.
